Joe
was born in Bermondsey, London on 11th
May 1926.
He first joined the
Army in August 1944 and his first unit was the Royal Army Service Corps. He
soon volunteered for Airborne service and undertook his parachute training.
By January 1945 he was with 6th Airborne Division in the RAOC and
subsequently the REME Workshops.
Joe served in
Palestine where the Division was engaged in the thankless and hopeless
attempt to keep the Arabs and Jews from each other's throats, until his
discharge in September 1947.
