John
was born in Llangurig, Wales on 11th
November 1932.
He joined the Army as
a National Serviceman in 1950 and served first in the Welsh Regiment, then
transferred to the South Wales Borderers.
With the Welsh he saw
action in Korea and subsequently with the South Wales Borderers in Eritrea.
On release from the Regular Army he had to serve for a further three years
with the Territorial Army and chose to do so with the 16th (Welsh) Parachute
Battalion.
He did his parachute
training at Cardiff and Abingdon and qualified in 1955.
