George
was born in Shildon, County Durham on
6th November 1925. He enlisted in 1942 at the age of seventeen in the Durham
Light Infantry. Later he transferred to the Royal Corps of Signals and then
in 1944 to Airborne Signals, where he became driver to Major Pringle, who
was the CO of W Troop, 3rd Squadron.
This unit served in
the Middle East and had a roving commission involving Iraq, Iran and Jordan.
Of his five years service, George spent almost four years overseas.
After discharge, on
his return to England, George joined his local T.A. unit, where he served
for a further four years before migrating to Australia in 1952.
