Patrick Sheddick

Pat  was born in New Malden, Surrey on 14th April 1923. He joined the British Army at age seventeen in 1940. In 1940 and 1943 he was in action as an infantryman in North Africa.

Later he returned to UK, where he volunteered to become a parachutist and joined 5th Parachute Brigade in 6th Airborne Division.

After the end of hostilities in Europe, the Division was intended to be sent to the Far East for the War against Japan. Only the 5th Brigade had reached India, when that war ended and they were then sent to Java to accept the surrender of the Japanese and keep the peace, until the return of the Dutch. This proved to be a difficult and unpleasant duty, because of the Indonesian struggle for Independence.

Pat was discharged from the British Army in 1946, but subsequently migrated to Australia and joined the Australian Army in 1951. Here he had a long and active service for twenty-six years to 1978. He saw action with Australian Infantry in Korea (1953/4) and Vietnam (1966/7) and was Mentioned in Despatches.

In August 1969 he was Commissioned into the Royal Australian Infantry and was promoted to Captain in 1972 and Major in 1976.

He was retired in 1978. He died in March 1993, aged seventy after a long and distinguished Military career.
