Bill
was born in Liverpool on 24th September
1924.
He first enrolled in
1942 for initial training with the Queen's Regiment. He served a term in
Northern Ireland with that Regiment. He then had a year with 915 Heavy
Ant-Aircraft Battery, before joining 6th Airborne Division.
His unit was 63
Company, Royal Army Service Corps, responsible for re-supply. Their task
include packing of all stores into containers and panniers; moving them to
the airfield and loading the planes. They also provided the air despatch
crews.
Bill
was involved in this vital and often dangerous task of re-supply in
Normandy, Arnhem and at the Rhine crossing. He went through Germany and was
unlucky enough to be wounded at Wismar at the very end of the War in Europe.
After the end of
hostilities 6th Airborne Division was sent to Palestine. Bill served there
for a further eighteen months, during which he took his parachute course in 1946.
