Greg Mead

Greg  was born in Perth, Western Australia on August 6tgh 1946.

His father was a Pilot/Air Traffic Controller, in the RAAF from 1941 until 1968. Part of his service included the Maralinga Atomic Bomb testing program. He was there for three tests.

His mother served in the RAAF for aperiod of four years during WW@.

His father transferred to RAAF Butterworth in Malaya during the summer of 1962/3. They lived there during the Indonesian Confrontation and Civil Uprising. Malaya became Malasia in 1964.

Greg went to eight schools, finishing with correspondence lessons at the RAAF school in Penang and six months at the Education Section, RAAF Base Butterworth, Malaysia. He joined the RAAF from RAAF Butterwoth on 16th May 1965.

He trained as a supplier, also as a free-fall parachutist with the Commando Skydivers, over a two-year period with the intention of becoming a parachute jump instructor.

He served in Vietnam from 13th May 1968 to 14th May 1969 with 1 Operational Support Unit RAAF, Vung Tau.

His duties included supply,guard, patrols, observer in helicopters, assistant load-master in Caribous. He flew with the Americans a number of times, in areas from north of Nha Trang, Phan Rang, Nui Dat, the cental Highlands and over the Mekong Delta. Being a small (RAAF) contingent, many duties overlapped.

Posted from Vietnam to Base Squadron, Laverton his duties included investigation, in charge of chemicals, gases and dangerous goods.

He was discharged from the RAAF on 16th May 1971.
