Sid
was born in Hull, East Yorkshire on 21st December 1926. He joined the Army
at age 18 in January 1945 and was posted to the West Yorkshire Regiment,
from which he promptly volunteered for the Parachute Regiment. He was posted
to 17th Battalion, which was then serving in Palestine in the thankless role
of peace-keeper between Jews and Arabs.
After
Sid's service was not as long as it might have been, because he was needed
as a bricklayer at a time when they were urgently required for repair of
war-time bomb damage and was therefore released as Class B.
