Len
was born in Chiswick, London in January, 1926.
He enlisted
straight from school into the Yorkshire and Lancashire Regiment.
He fought with that Regiment in Normandy from August 1944. He was
then transferred to the 9th Battalion, Seaforth Highlanders and
saw action with them in the Ardennes, where he was wounded. When
the 9th Battalion was disbanded (in 1945), Len transferred to the
2nd Battalion, which was then serving in Germany.
He was
released from the Army in 1947, but soon re-enlisted, this time in
the Royal Engineers. After service in Gibraltar, Len joined the
9th Airborne Squadron, R.E.
In 1950 he
qualified as a parachutist and continued to serve, in Cyprus and
Egypt, until he was finally released in 1954.
His death
occurred in 1998.
