Wally
was born in Birmingham on 14th May 1937
He served with the
9th Parachute Squadron, Royal Engineers from 1956 to 1960. During this
period he served two tours in Cyprus and was also involved in the Suez
landings in the Canal Zone in 1956.
He
subsequently transferred to the 48th Field Squadron, Royal Engineers and
then to the 11th Independent Squadron. This covered the period from 1960 to
1964 and included service in Aden, Borneo and Malaysia.
Unusual
and interesting events which took place during his service were his
participation in the Edinburgh Tattoo in 1959 and his crossing of the
English Channel, in a canoe, both ways, in 1960.
