Bill Ansell

Bill was born in Bulford, Wiltshire in 1914. At the age of eighteen he enlisted as a Regular soldier in the Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry.

He went with the Second Battalion to India, where most of his service was at Bareilly., but included spells on the North West Frontier. He was discharged in 1939 but was immediately recalled for War Service.

He saw action with the BEF in France and was amongst those evacuated from Dunkirk.

The 2nd Ox and Bucks were early converted to glider borne as part of the 1st Airborne Division, but were later transferred to the 6th Airborne Division on it's formation.

Bill flew into Normandy on 'D' Day, then went to the Ardennes at Christmas 1944 and finally by glider to Germany for the Rhine crossing and advance to the Baltic. He therefore served very actively throughout the whole of the Second World War and was released in 1945.

Sadly he died in 1995.
